The European Commission says the European Digital Infrastructure Consortium for Agri-Food has officially been established, launching cooperation on cross-border digital infrastructure for the agri-food sector. Its seat is in Paris, and the Commission’s implementing decision was adopted on 8 September 2026.

The consortium’s initial work includes developing a common Digital Farm ID. The Commission describes it as a planned federated and interoperable identifier that would connect with national systems; where relevant, it is intended to align with technical solutions in the European Digital Identity Wallet ecosystem, including European Business Wallets. The Commission says the ID could reduce reporting and administrative work and support access to data for AI-based services, but these are prospective aims rather than available services.

The consortium will also explore AI applications for risk management, product traceability and carbon certification through multi-country deployment actions that are set to receive support. The Commission said other EU Member States may seek to join under the consortium’s statutes.

EDICs are international organisations under the Digital Decade Policy Programme through which Member States can jointly develop, operate and invest in cross-border digital infrastructure. This report is an independent summary/adaptation of the cited Commission source; no EU endorsement is implied.

The announcement marks the formal creation of a shared EU-level structure for agri-food digital infrastructure, while making clear that its proposed identifier and AI-related services have not been presented as already operational.

The European Commission published its announcement on 1 October 2026. It states that the implementing decision establishing the EDIC for Agri-Food was adopted on 8 September 2026; the source does not give a date for the Paris launch event.
